Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival 2013 Starts Today

The eleventh edition of Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) is starting from today with opening screening of ‘Chasing Rainbows’, a world premiere feature film by Sahara Sharma at City Hall, Exhibition Road in Putalisadak.

KIMFF 2013 is scheduled to continue for four days until 15th December. The festival will be closing with special screening of ‘The Epic of Everest’ by Captain John Neol, which is about the first conquest of Everest in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norway.

KIMFF 2013 has brought inspiring showcase of short films on mountains picturing the lifestyle of people living there, a touch of lively nature and culture with stirring stories of ambitions and conflicts with the life in mountains.

There will be total of 47 films from 20 different countries screening along the festival which are wide-ranging based on short film, fiction, documentary, animation and experimental production. The films will be presenting a variety of themes comprising of adventure and climbing, struggle, culture, poverty and development, gender, global tendency and gentrification, and festivity of the social life.

KIMFF is a member of International Alliance for Mountain Film and this festival is being organized by Himal Association. The festival will be highlighting several exhibitions focusing on varied subjects of struggle of humankind with socio-economic conflicts.

There will also be an award distribution ceremony on the last day, 15 December, for categories of International Competition and Nepal Panorama. The winners under International Competition will receive a prize of USD 1500, 1000, and 500 respectively and under the Nepal Panorama category, the Best Documentary will be awarded Rs. 25,000 and the Best Fiction Film will be awarded Rs. 25,000.

Also, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is sponsoring “ICIMOD Mountain Film Award” of USD 1000, on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, to support filmmakers from its member countries. All films will also be competing for the Audience Award based on the votes given by viewers.
