Subash Chandra Nembang Sworn in as a New CA Chairman

At an oath ceremony held today at Sheetal Niwas, Subash Chandra Nembang took the oath of office and secrecy under President Ram Baran Yadav. Nembang has been unanimously elected as the chairman of Constituent Assembly (CA). At the swearing-in program, Vice-President Parmananda Jha, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, Acting Chief Justice Damodar Prasad Sharma, heads of constitutional bodies and other organizations were also present.

Previously, UCPN (M) has also been claiming for CA chair. But, after upholding consensus among the major political parties, Nembang became the sole candidate for the CA chair. Nembang was solidly appointed as CA chair by the 571 CA members with support from Nepali Congress (NC), RPP-N and other parties representing in CA. Nembang was also the chairman of the previous CA.

Taking the CA chair, Nembang sworn that he would try his best to formulate the constitution within a year. He also said that there is no alternative for the political parties to come together for issuing the constitution within the one year period they had promised. Nembang further said that he would initiate for holding ownership of agreements from the previous CA.

Nembang, 61 is a leader of CPN-UML. In the CA Election 2013, he won a constituency from Illam – 2. As a CA chair, Nembang will also be acting as House Speaker of the Legislature Parliament.
